Cheryl Tolbert, 58, a New Orleans native, fled the city with her father, Vernon Gaines, 82, after hurricane Katrina destroyed the family home, and moved to Lexington to join her sister, Lexington resident Rhonda Barnett, two days later.

In the last year, she has put her life back together and has written a song, "Out of the Storm", praising what God can do in the most difficult times of life.

This first performance of the song was at St. Luke United Methodist Church August 27. She now teaches vocal music at Crawford Middle School.
